The Ripley Skirt.
Why the Full Midi Skirt Never Truly Goes Away
The full midi skirt has always had a place in fashion because it does something rather magical: it balances the body.
Christian Dior understood this in the late 1940s with his famous New Look silhouette. Grace Kelly wore full skirts because they made her look impossibly poised. Audrey Hepburn made them feel youthful, effortless and quietly chic.
My own version of this shape comes less from old Hollywood and more from the world of The Talented Mr Ripley. I ADORE the styling of this film.
I have always been captivated by the outfits of Gwyneth Paltrow’s character, Marge. The sun-drenched Italian coast. The easy glamour. The way she wears clothes that are feminine and beautiful, but never look as though she has tried too hard.
High-waisted skirts. Crisp cotton. Knotted shirts. Soft movement. A kind of relaxed sophistication that feels just as right today as it did then.
That is where the Ripley Skirt began.
It has that same Italian Riviera mood to it: preppy, feminine, relaxed and effortlessly luxurious.
The Secret Is In The Shape
The reason a full midi skirt flatters so many women is that it does not cling. Instead, it skims.
The Ripley Skirt falls away from the body in exactly the right place, gently floating over hips and thighs rather than drawing attention to them. The fullness creates balance and movement, while the midi length gives the whole silhouette elegance.
And unlike many skirts that dictate where they must sit, ours gives you a choice.
The deep shirred waistband is one of the things our customers love most. You can wear it higher on the waist for more definition, or lower on the hip for a more relaxed feel. It allows every woman to find the place that suits her body best.
Just as importantly, the deep shirring smooths the tummy beautifully. Rather than cutting across the body, it creates a softer, flatter line.
This is why the shape works on so many women.
It is not designed for one body type. It is designed for real women.
Clever Clothes Make The Best Clothes
I always think the most luxurious clothes are often the ones where you cannot immediately see why they work so well.
The Ripley Skirt looks effortless, but there is a lot of thought behind it.
We have made it in two of our most-loved fabrics.
The first is our Paloma cotton, a crisp 100% poplin that feels fresh, cool and beautifully polished.
The second is our beloved Nonni Gingham, which has all the nostalgia and charm of a classic gingham, but in a shape that feels thoroughly modern.
Both fabrics are light and breathable, and because neither is see-through, we have left the skirt unlined. I wanted it to feel cool and easy in summer. No heaviness. No unnecessary layers. Just that wonderful feeling of fabric moving around you.
The construction is where it becomes particularly clever.
The deep double-faced hem adds just enough weight to hold the skirt beautifully. Rather than flying out awkwardly or clinging to the legs, it moves with a soft, controlled float.
You notice it most when you walk.
There is something wonderfully elegant about a skirt that moves properly.
It Is Easier To Wear Than You Think
One of the biggest misconceptions about a full midi skirt is that it is difficult.
Actually, it may be one of the easiest things in your wardrobe.
The Ripley Skirt looks just as right with a simple white Conrad cotton knit as it does with one of our Poet blouses or a softly French-tucked shirt.
It works with ballet flats, trainers, simple slides or a flip flop on holiday. For evenings, I love it with a wedge or a low block heel.
The only thing I would avoid is anything too high or too delicate. A towering heel can make the shape feel too formal and rather dated. The modernity of this skirt comes from keeping it relaxed.
That is the beauty of it.
You can wear it to lunch, the shops, on holiday, out to dinner, walking around a market in the sunshine or sitting outside with a glass of wine at the end of the day.
It never feels overdressed.
It simply makes you feel like the best version of yourself.
The Return Of Feminine Dressing
I think many women are ready to come back to clothes that feel feminine again, but without sacrificing comfort.
We do not want stiff occasionwear. We do not want clothes that pinch or pull or need constant adjusting.
We want ease. We want practicality. We want to be able to wash something, dry it quickly and wear it again the next day.
But we also want to feel special.
The Ripley Skirt does both.
It has pockets hidden in the seams, because I think every good skirt should. It is easy to wash, dries quickly and is cool even on the hottest days.
Yet somehow, when you put it on, it still feels like more than just an everyday skirt.
It has that rare quality of making you stand a little taller.
Perhaps because, for a moment, you feel a little like Marge on the Italian Riviera. Relaxed. Elegant.
Sun on your shoulders. A skirt moving perfectly as you walk.
And really, what could be more timeless than that?
